See the dictionary header for full documentation.
The FreeDict version is located at https://freedict.org/downloads
The first release (0.1) is accompanied by
* a file listing the entries from the TeX version that did not make it into
SGML and therefore are not present in the XML version (courtesy of Radek Moszczyński), in etc/
* an XSLT script that documents the transformation from SGML (actually, an XML-ised version
of it, with some minor fixes introduced, and with transcriptions transduced into IPA)
[this script unfortunately has gone missing]
* a notes file that documents the process of the initial SGML->XML conversion and
contains hints on where to look for problems; in etc/
A DICT version derived from it by Mateusz Kielar should be available at https://code.google.com/p/eng-pol/

The FreeDict dictionary was converted from an SGML version of Nowy Słownik
angielsko-polski (New English-Polish Dictionary) by

and
(1992). Warszawa: Editions Spotkania.
ISBN-83-85195-81-5.

The dictionary was created in TeX and converted to SGML by
and
of the University of Warsaw.

Idarex codes were added to it (possibly by Tadeusz Piotrowski and/or his students).

The GNU release was facilitated by
of the University of
Warsaw.

The authors' licensing statement is included as PDF in the etc/ directory (the TEI
version mentioned there is a different version produced by students of the University of
Warsaw; that version was not used in the creation of the FreeDict dictionary).

See the revisionDesc and the ChangeLog file for more details.

The TeX, SGML and XML-ised SGML versions (the latter accompanied by an XSLT conversion
script by Piotr Bański, included for verifiability and reproducibility of the results) are
released together with release 0.1 of this dictionary.[note: the script appears to have been
misplaced or overwritten, it will be added when/if found).

the only lexicographic intrusion was splitting <mentioned>protégé</mentioned>/<mentioned>protégée</mentioned> to make them analogical to <mentioned>fiancé</mentioned>/<mentioned>fiancée</mentioned>, to make it easier to process them (note the difference in the POS: <mentioned>protégé</mentioned>/<mentioned>protégée</mentioned> is categorised as Adj, <mentioned>fiancé</mentioned> is N);

wrote a conversion script to TEI XML (included with the post-SGML version as partial documentation);

created this header, xincluding the individual letter files, so that the dictionary is easier to maintain;

there are still a lot of fixes to do -- e.g. add entries missing in the SGML version (e.g. <mentioned>can</mentioned>! etc.) from the TeX version (a list by Radek Moszczyński is provided), fix POS (typo in inter(j), V Refl), unify the idarexen, join equivalents that were split around the '/' (km/h initially ended up as separate strings), split some ambiguous notes (e.g. 'gloss', see the conversion script for comments) into separate subclasses, split some comma-separated variant transcriptions into separate elements; separate regional variants Br/US from e.g. Latin expansions of some abbreviations (cf. <mentioned>cf.</mentioned>), which should not be located by headword queries (in this case, a query for <mentioned>confer</mentioned>);

some entries that were proper subparts of other entries (mostly US spellings) were eliminated from the TEI version (but preserved in the post-SGML XML version) - the full list can be found in the XSLT conversion script;

a separate item is extending the dictionary with an XML representation of idarexen (described in a paper by Bański and Moszczyński, LREC-08);

the companion volume (pol-eng) awaits conversion from the TeX source;

TEI-FreeDict version of the English-Polish dictionary by Tadeusz Piotrowski and Zygmunt Saloni.
See: https://github.com/freedict/fd-dictionaries/tree/master/eng-pol
This is a list of missing headwords, i.e. headwords present in the TeX version of the
dictionary and absent from the SGML version. It was derived by Radek Moszczyński by
first generating the list of all headwords from the TeX version and diffing it against
the list derived from the SGML version. As Marcin Woliński remarked in an e-mail
conversation, the reason for this gap is that the Perl/Prolog converted used to create
the SGML representation would break on complicated entries and that possibly, those entries
have been converted manually. (But even if they have, they aren't part of this release.)
This list reflects the state of affairs of May 2011. Volunteers wishing to help convert the
missing headwords are warmly welcome -- please e-mail the project list or one of the project
administrators, e.g. bansp in-domain o2.pl.

This is the content of the notes that I have made during
the conversion of the GPL-ed English - Polish dictionary by
Tadeusz Piotrowski and Zygmunt Saloni (1992).
Unfortunately, I am not able to locate the XSL script that I used
to transduce SGML into TEI XML. It had SO many comments inside...
If I ever find it in the vastness of my backups and the mess of
my subsequent disks, I will roll another tarball of this release (0.1).
For more information, see
http://clip.ipipan.waw.pl/Nowy_slownik_angielsko-polski
Piotr Bański, 28 May 2011
=====================
Unstructured fragments of my notes follow.
Latin2: everything.
for G in *.sgml; do iconv -f LATIN2 -t UTF-8 <$G >$G.xml; done
Generate a .dtd
Replace XBDICT with xbdict, add the XML prolog.
é with é
ê with ê
â with â
ï with ï
è with è
Added spellings without these diacritics (around 40 additions)
<spl>pâté</spl>
<spl>pate</spl>
Adjusted matinée, negligée, séance, soufflé, naïve (they were preceded by the diacritic-less form; I want to always index entries by the last orth, without introducing checks in the loop).
Split protégé/protégée to make them analogical to fiancé/fiancée (noting the difference in the POS: protégé/protégée is Adj, fiancé is N).
Potential danger for indexing, will probably have to index by hand here:
<spl>rosé</spl>
<spl>rose</spl>
Pronunciation changes:
ei --> eɪ (2187 replacements);
ai --> aɪ (1650 replacements);
oi --> ɔɪ (149)
e{\e} --> ɛə (251)
u: 1048 (hmm, why is it 1042 later? check!!!!)
ou --> əʊ (1332)
{\e}: --> ɜ: (721)
{t} --> ɑ (829)
o: --> ɔ:(1052)
{\o} --> æ (2456)
for \cdot, I chose the "dot operator" $sdot; ⋅ (420 replacements)
for the accompanying $, I chose non-breaking-space ( ).
{\n} --> ŋ (1086)
{\a} --> ʌ (1507)
d{\z} --> ʤ (847)
{\z} --> ʒ (101)
t{\s} --> ʧ (550)
{\s} --> ʃ (1477)
{\q} --> θ (393)
{\h} --> ð (150)
{\`} --> ˈ (13762)
{\,} --> ˌ (2198)
{\e} --> ə (10347)
au --> aʊ (421)
u --> ʊ (670)
(<phonetic>.*)i(.*<)
i --> ɪ (8169+2180+405+62+5)
o --> ɒ (1629+21)
(for the sake of completeness: u: - 1042; i: - 1259)
number of <phonetic> elements: 16334; some of them should be split around ", " (for variants)
careful here:
<spl>aesthetic</spl>
<spl>esthetic</spl>
<lang>US</lang>
(encoding by position, nasty)
